The Best Ways to Prep for Summer Break with Kids

With June 21st fast approaching, summer is nearly here! There is still time to get your home and family prepared for the months ahead. With school years ending, now is the perfect time to make sure you’re ready to conquer and make the most of this summer vacation. What does summer preparation look like? We have gathered our top recommendations for prepping your space and your kids below.

1: Print off a big calendar and mark off important dates. Summertime means a shift in routine and schedule! It can be helpful to print or purchase a large calendar to pin up on your wall, and pencil in all significant dates and happenings for the summer months ahead. Whether this means labeling weeks where the kiddos are traveling, at camp, daycare, play dates, birthdays or other summer activities, this can be a helpful way to have everything in one place.

2: Set aside time to clean and organize your summer essentials. After the winter months, it’s likely that a lot of your summer items haven’t had much use and might need a wash or an unpacking. Gather all of your summer essentials like beach towels, sporting gear, yard tools, sunscreens, etc. and find spaces in your home where they can live and be easily accessible all summer long. This can also be the perfect time to edit your belongings, and get rid of anything that you know you no longer need, is damaged or broken. Having an organizational system will help you keep things accounted for and readily available all summer long!

3: Think through chores. Keeping kids accountable when school is not in session can be beneficial for not only them and their responsible habits, but also your own sanity and peace of mind! Having kids around the house day in and day out can be a lot, and you can take some of the stress off of your plate by including the kids in chores and cleaning time. This will keep your kids busy, while also having little helpers to keep the house tidy. It can be useful for your kids and yourself visually to have a chore chart where all tasks can be delegated.

4: Prepare your outdoor space for summer activities. One of the greatest ways to keep your kids entertained and cool during the summer is with outdoor activities! Investing in fun water games and outside activities is a great way to occupy your kids during the summer. Prep your space by mowing the lawn, adding string lights for the evening outdoors, getting the grill ready, and ensuring your kids have a safe space to play outside.

5: Refresh your families wardrobes. With growing kids, having seasonal wardrobe refreshes can be so necessary. When you plan ahead and get the summer essentials ready ahead of time, you will avoid the last minute stressors of kids not having swimsuits that fit, or sandals that are in good shape. Take inventory of your kids summer wardrobes and donate what no longer fits, while listing out what is needed. This is a great time to also pack away winter wardrobes for the season, so that you make room for the new!
