Smart Tips For Organizing Your Beauty Products

When it comes to beauty products, there is nothing quite as frustrating as sifting through a makeup bag or cluttered drawer, in search of your most-loved lip gloss. It can be incredibly easy to hold on to makeup for years and toss it in a (what feels like) bottomless drawer. When this happens, we end up holding on to supplies for months (or years) after their expiration dates and only using 10% of the products. Fortunately, the days of chaotic beauty bags, cabinets, and drawers are gone, because I may not be a beauty guru, but I definitely know a thing or two about organizing beauty products!

As you would with organizing any space, step one is to remove all the items and place them on the counter. From here, separate and categorize all your similar items. This means putting mascaras together, face products together, etc. Once all your products are a part of a family, it’s time to edit.

It can be easy to forget that beauty products have expiration dates, but they absolutely do! If your products aren’t clearly labeled with an expiration date, here is a general rule of thumb we go by for figuring out when it’s time to toss a product:

Once you have ethically disposed of all expired items, I want you to decide what items currently serve you. We are probably all guilty of holding on to that one lipstick or eye shadow that we will “maybe, possibly use if the occasion occurs.” I know it can be difficult, but I want you to genuinely decide which items spark joy in your life right now. Any items that don’t, can be disposed of (or if you haven’t used the item yet, donated). Remember, any items that you hold on to that you don’t use are only taking space from the items you do use

Now that your items are categorized and edited, it’s time to choose a storage solution that makes sense in your space and keeps your daily products accessible. The solution you pick should be chosen based on a variety of reasons, like the amount of space you have and how many products you own. Pro tip: whichever solution you move forward with, keep the items closest to their expiration date near the front (or top) so they are the first used!

IN A DRAWER:

When it comes to using a drawer for your beauty products, it’s important to first identify whether it’s a deep drawer or shallow drawer. Your process of separation and containment will be the same, but the products you use will likely be very different. Remember to play around with where you place your products. It might take time, but it should be sustainable and make sense to you!

  1. Deep Drawer Organizers These clear and simple deep drawer organizers are such an easy way to elevate your beauty product storage. Each compartment allows space for a separate belonging (don’t be afraid to play around with different items in each compartment to find what works for you). I also love how easy it is to find lightweight items (that normally fall to the bottom of the beauty bag).

  2. Recyclable Drawer Organizers Love these sustainable organizers for deep drawers as well! They make it so easy to create a custom layout that fits your needs and products.

  3. Shallow Drawer Organizers These are my tried & true organizers for shallow drawers. They are so durable and provide so many compartment options to store all your beauty products!

ON A SHELF

Shelves are typically spacious, so you can typically work with a variety of organization items to store your beauty collection. Like any other area, I want to keep everything divided, while having everything accessible to grab.

  1. 3 Tier Riser Using a riser on a shelf will allow you to see everything! It’s also perfect for a variety of products, like fragrances, foundations, or any other “standing” items.

  2. Stacking Bin Silver If you have any bulkier items like lotions, masks, or even backstock, these will be a dream come true! I love these bin clips for labeling them.

  3. Lazy Susan If you know me, you know I love a Lazy Susan. Similar to the risers, this will give you an efficient way to get to all your products. It’s also amazing because you can essentially put any standing items on them! I do recommend items that won’t tip over easily when being spun.

UNDER THE SINK

Under the sink can so often be a forgotten area, but it is so useful when it comes to organizing bathroom essentials, like beauty products! I like to work with a variety of organization items to create a functional and accessible storage area.

  1. Stackable Drawers Under the sink, you typically have more space to go vertical! For example, you can have one drawer for eye products, one drawer for lip products and one for face products. I love to label the front of the drawer with the product name to minimize any searching time.

  2. Modular Drawers I love how you can get these drawers in a variety of widths. It’s perfect for creating a custom storage solution for your beauty collection. I also, personally, prefer a pull-out option when it comes to under-the-sink for easier access.

  3. Lazy Susan Similar to shelves, I love using this Lazy Susan as an easy way to see all my items just by rotating.

ON THE COUNTER

Don’t have a drawer or cabinet for beauty products? No problem! These are some of the items I am obsessed with for creating a confined beauty product zone on top of your counter.

  1. Luxe Acrylic Modular Makeup System I love the different compartments in this one! It’s perfect if you have an eclectic round-up of products.

  2. Small Shallow Drawer Clear I am always a fan of these acrylic compartments so you can mix & match them based on your inventory. You can truly curate it for your needs/wants.

  3. Clarity Cosmetics & Palette Organizer With Drawer This is another great option if you have a variety of products. You can easily place your face products, like powders, blushes, & bronzers in the drawers, and mascaras, brushes, and finishing sprays in the compartment on top.

  4. Acrylic Tall Makeup Storage Kit One thing I love about counter organizers is you can really specialize it to your space. If you aren’t working with a large counter, using vertical space with this tall makeup storage kit is perfect!

  5. Supersize Makeup Organizer I am such a big fan of acrylic, but cannot deny how cute this blush and grey organizer is. Your products should be organized functionally first, but making it aesthetic is important too! This one is also large in size if you have a larger quantity of products!

  6. 2-Tier Acrylic Tower If perfumes are part of your beauty collection, you will love this tower! It displays fragrances so beautifully.
