Why We Love Cube Units in a Kids Playroom

One of LIJ’s favorite spaces to organize is a kids playroom. There’s typically a lot going on in these spaces, which of course, is because of the collections of toys so many kiddos have! Our #1 solution for playroom organization is installing a cubby shelving system. A lot of the time, clients already have these in place, but if they don’t, we typically opt to install them in ourselves. They’re amazing not only because they allow for functional categorizing, but we also love them because they add stylish flair to any space! They’re also a cost effective way to organize a space that’s constantly evolving.

These are some of our faves:

Adding cube shaped baskets & bins is a great opportunity to bring in an element of decor tying the space to the rest of your home’s style. One of the reasons cube storage is so great in a kids space is because they conceal the look of toys.  This is especially great if your play area is in a common space in the home! When we implement this kind of system into a client’s home, we always take into consideration their home’s existing style and the look they’re embodying. Based on that, we choose the best cubes to style the space!

PRO TIP: Before you buy, measure and make sure your cubes are the right size for the unit you’re choosing!

Here are some of the bins we love:

For the organizing, there are lots of ways to go about creating your system, and no two systems will look the same. Our goal in a playroom is to always set up a system right so that you only need to do it once! So thinking about what will work best for your kids first is key.  Do they have lots of big toys? Consider using the toys that are too big to be binned out as styling elements and loosely binning the others. If there are lots of small parts and pieces, try micro-sorting and in smaller containers within the bins. Be sure to put like-items and similar categories in the same bin! For labeling, you can opt for bin clips with pictures of the categories (this is great for younger kids who can’t read yet), or you can use words. If you don’t want bin clips to mess with the ambiance of the room, depending on the material of your bins, you can use a label maker and label it on the upper lip or inside back of the bin. This way, you can’t see it from the outside but it will be visible during clean-up time!

These are our favorite bin organizing products:

Remember that no matter how you choose to set up your cube shelving for the kids, creating the system in the first place is a huge step in streamlining the kids’ routines!
